Each year in Australia around 1.6 million mattresses end up in landfill. An average mattress contains 1.5 kg of polyurethane foams which means over 2,000 tonnes of foam gets thrown away.
To address this growing concern, the Soft Landing Product Stewardship Scheme has been founded by passionate industry members, AH Beard, Sealy, Tempur, Harvey Norman, Domayne, Thermotec, TIC Global, SleepMaker, Joyce Foam Products and Covestro.
Soft Landing is Australia’s largest mattress recycler, last year winning Social Enterprise of the Year. They divert waste mattresses from landfill and strip the components for reuse. Soft Landing has developed a closed-loop material recovery for mattress components and offers employment opportunities to disadvantaged Australians.
On Wednesday June 14, the Soft Landing Product Stewardship Scheme is holding a Breakfast Briefing hosted by Sustainability Victoria.
