October 13 2019 marks the beginning of the Bridgestone World Solar Car Challenge in Australia and the Covestro team are thrilled to be on board as major sponsors for Team Sonnenwagen Aachen – a German based team from RWTH Aachen University.
Motivated by a need to protect the world’s finite resources, the Bridgestone World Solar Car Challenge brings together the greatest minds from around the world with one single challenge: to travel the Australian outback in a vehicle that is powered only by the energy of the sun.
Participating students, such as those from RWTH Aachen University are required to build a vehicle with their own hands and power it across a gruelling 3000km route from Darwin to Adelaide.
A team of 45 people at Aachen University have brought the Covestro Sonnenwagen vehicle to life, with Covestro providing financial support as well as a range of innovative materials and technologies.
The Sonnenwagen weighs less than 200 kilograms and can reach a top speed of 140 kilometres per hour. The 2019 model features a range of high-quality plastics and coatings from Covestro which are used in the engine, paintwork, headlamps, and steering wheel.
Supporting Team Sonnenwagen is part of Covestro’s commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since the UN’s inception of these goals in 2015, Covestro has been actively working to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Covestro supports the three pillars of sustainable development – People, Planet, Profit.
