Covestro is proud to be the Gold Sponsor of Team Sonnenwagen as they prepare to compete in the 2019 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Held in the Australian outback between October 13th and October 20th, the Solar World Challenge is considered to be the toughest solar race in the world, as more than 40 teams aim to travel 3,022 kilometres from Darwin to Adelaide without a single drop of fuel.
The 2019 World Solar Challenge will mark the race’s 15th longitudinal crossing of Australia. It brings together the brightest minds and innovative materials from universities, corporations and some secondary schools, with the aim of promoting research into solar powered cars.
Team Sonnenwagen are from Aachen University in Germany. As their gold sponsor for the event, Covestro will supply the team with materials and technical services to help them push the boundaries of what is possible within the realm of sustainable mobility.
The Team Sonnenwagen car will use an innovative automotive coating that contains Covestro’s bio-based hardener Desmodur® eco N 7300. The coating is designed to protect the vehicle from the extreme heat, dust and UV radiation that will be experienced in the Australian outback. Up to 70 percent of the product’s content comes from biomass, which is known to reduce the environmental footprint of traditional paint hardeners by up to 30 percent.
Supporting Team Sonnenwagen is part of Covestro’s commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since the UN’s inception of these goals in 2015, Covestro has been actively working to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Covestro supports the three pillars of sustainable development – People, Planet, Profit. By working with initiatives such as Team Sonnenwagen, we are proud to play a role in making the mobility of the future as sustainable as possible.
